Subject: Nevada Firefighter Memorial Service

It is disheartening to feel the need to address this matter, however I feel that it should be of concern to all Nevada firefighters whether retired or still active, career or volunteer.

The 2017 Nevada Legislature authorized the placement of the Nevada Firefighter Memorial to be moved to the capitol grounds.

EMERGENCY REQUEST OF SENATE MAJORITY LEADER
SENATE BILL NO. 540–SENATORS FORD, DENIS, PARKS, SPEARMAN, ATKINSON; CANCELA, CANNIZZARO, FARLEY, MANENDO, RATTI, SEGERBLOM AND WOODHOUSE

MAY 18, 2017
AN ACT relating to firefighters; directing the Legislative Commission to authorize the construction or installation of a memorial to Nevada firefighters on the Capitol Complex; and providing other matters properly relating thereto.

Legislative Counsel’s Digest: This bill directs the Legislative Commission to authorize the construction or installation of a memorial to the firefighters of this State on the grounds of the Capitol Complex. This bill also requires the Legislative Commission to select the design of the memorial from three alternative designs for such a memorial submitted by the Professional Firefighters of Nevada. Before submitting the alternative designs, this bill requires the Professional Firefighters of Nevada to consult with professional and volunteer firefighter organizations not represented by the Professional Firefighters of Nevada. Finally, this bill prohibits public money from being spent for the design, construction or installation of the memorial.

Although the P.F.F.N. has done a remarkable job of fundraising and constructing the memorial, there has not been the traditional annual memorial service since the move. The service has been held at the former memorial site since it was dedicated in 1994. There are rumors of a service to be held next spring during the legislative session. It is my opinion that the fallen firefighters in this state be honored each year in the manner that was intended when the original memorial was built and not be utilized as a political platform. We have reached out to the P.F.F.N. leadership but have received no information. I feel this an important event to honor the fallen and should not be compromised.

Sincerely,

Steve McClintock
